Those working right up until Christmas might be hard pressed to find the perfect present, with most businesses shutting their doors on the day. Major retailers such as Westfield, Myer, Coles, Woolworths and Aldi will not be open on December 25, but many will remain open late on Christmas eve to catch last minute shoppers. Most 7-Eleven franchises across Australia will be open on Christmas day as the majority of stores trade 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Service stations such as Caltex and Shell will also remain open for those needing to fuel up between family events on Christmas. Bottleshops are closed on Christmas as the day is listed as a restricted trading day in NSW, along with Good Friday, Easter Sunday and ANZAC Day. This means most large stores are prohibited from trading. But Dan Murphy's and BWS in both ACT and Tasmania can trade on Christmas Day and Boxing Day if they choose.

Some of the stores who have general licenses hotel licenses are also allowed to trade on Christmas Day and Boxing Day if the license condition and state regulation allows it. The race is on as shoppers around the country scramble to buy last minute gifts and stock the fridge in time for Christmas day shoppers in Sydney city pictured.

Shoppers are seen carrying out last minute Christmas shopping in Sydney on Friday. Smaller independent stores and specific shops with exemptions may be allowed to open. While some bars, pubs and restaurants will shut their doors for Christmas Day, many will offer special meals for the day. Westfield and other shopping centres will also be closed Christmas Day before some reopen on Boxing Day to start the annual sales. If your still chasing a juicy turkey, don't worry.
